Essay Topics For Kafka On The Shore

Essay Topics For Kafka On The Shore

Are you searching for some paper subjects for Kafka on the Shore? This is the principal book by Umberto Eco that I am perusing after I had perused his initial two books, The Name of the Rose and The Name of the Sea. I truly delighted in both of these books and I found myself recalling them in the wake of completing Kafka on the Shore.

Here are some exposition points for Kafka on the Shore that I discovered intriguing. The first was about the historical backdrop of writing in America. In this paper, I figured it would be a smart thought to do a prologue to the creator. I needed to set aside the effort to make it sound like it was composed by somebody with a truly elevated assessment of the author that we are discussing, and there was something very clever about that as well.

The next exposition subjects for Kafka on the Shore that I discovered intr iguing was about the significance of expounding on oneself. While composing this article, I understood that I felt that Eco had gotten exceptionally close to home in this book. I discovered it very fascinating how he found the correct words to state that his characters were passionate people who were keeping in touch with the purpose of tears. It truly was a special and intriguing approach to convey this message.

Another article subjects for Kafka on the Shore that I discovered truly entrancing was on how data is lost in interpretation. This was an intriguing theme since I generally imagined that Eco's interpretations from Italian to English were quite acceptable. I truly like that he contemplated how the narratives and books were converted into various dialects. There is something fascinating about the possibility that one may compose an incredible book about some distant spot and how a similar sort of story may be told in a language other than English.

The last article themes for Kafka on the Shore that I discovered intriguing was maturing. I felt that this paper would help represent how this topic would be utilized in the book. For example, a character may experience a currency or an assortment of coins as a trinket in the wake of visiting the anecdotal goal that the character visited. I likewise thought that it was intriguing that Eco fused portrayals of the extraordinary spots into his depiction of the characters' visit to a place.

Overall, I found the article points for Kafka on the Shore to be fascinating. It was fascinating to perceive how Eco had carried a greater amount of the writer's character to the book. As I stated, I truly delighted in the initial paper theme, which secured the historical backdrop of writing in America. Current State Of Broadband Access For Arkansas School...

Conceptual Framework: The Need for Increased Broadband in Arkansas EDLE 699V: Introduction to Qualitative Research Holly D. Glover University of Arkansas Fall 2014 Introduction The current state of broadband access for Arkansas school districts limits the ability for the districts to comply with new state mandated programs and the availability of resources to support student and teacher learning within the school environment. The limited broadband access reaches far beyond the walls of the classroom and student learning. Beginning in the 2014-2015 school year, districts statewide will be faced with implementing the online Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) assessments for students in grades third through eleventh. The new teacher evaluation program, Teacher Excellence and Support System (TESS), will be implemented, including the requirement for all educators to use Bloomboard to document evidence of classroom instruction. In addition, the Digital Learning Act 1280 includes significant changes including requiring all districts to offer a digital learning course to all graduates beginning in the 2014-2015 school year. Districts face significant obstacles with implementing state mandated programs and educational technologies to support learning are minimized due a loophole in Act 1050 of 2011 that prohibits Arkansas school districts the opportunity to utilize other resources for additional bandwidth. Textual Analysis and International Financial Reporting

Question: Discuss about the Textual Analysis and International Financial Reporting. Answer: Introduction The present assignment states the financial reporting analysis based on two Australian listed companies, Woolworths Limited and Wesfarmers Limited. The required analysis has been done based on the annual reports of latest financial year. The companies are strong competitor and engaged in the business of retail industry specialising in the sale of various products. The present report consists of discussion on conceptual framework compliance and AASB standards for recognizing and representing financial information for the benefit of stakeholders. The study also covers the concept of prudence level by considering the corporate reporting disparity together with the identification of disclosure differences in the companys financial information. Woolworths Limited, second largest Australian retailing company was founded in 1924 operates its business in Australia, New Zealand and India. The organisation is ASX listed with a present value around $30.2 billion and operating income $1.6 billion[1]. It has been noted that the company has employees capacity of around 202,000 that operates in approximately 3800 Australian region. The company is involved in Australian food as well as petrol retailing business with $ 39.4 million revenue consists of two- third of total sales[2]. Wesfarmers Limited is considered as largest conglomerate company in Australia which was founded in 1914. The company is listed on Australian Stock Exchange with a value of around $40.4 billion and operating income $3.6 billion with 205,000 number of employees strength. The major business of the organisation associates with the supermarkets in full- service, liquor shops, hotels as well as fuel stores[3]. Conceptual framework compliance and requirements of AASB standards Conceptual framework means analytical model which incorporates certain variations and standards to recognize and represent financial information to measure the companys performance and financial position. Australian companies are regulated by the standards of AASB in terms of nature, time and extent of companys financial information. The standards of conceptual framework involves recognition of financial information based on the level of prudence, accrual system and going concern to measure the assets, liabilities and report the incomes and expenses[4]. The major requirement of conceptual framework involves accrual basis as well as going concern for measuring the companys sustainability and accountable profitability. In view of the financial report of Woolworths Limited, the company followed accrual method and going concern method to reflect the changes in earnings[5]. Disclosure of consolidation income, sales value for group business before and after tax represents compliance of principles of accounting. Amount of consolidation profit $2,146 million has been determined by incorporating relevant standards and principles[6]. Similarly, for recognizing the amount of dividend paid and payable, interim dividend has been reported in the income statement whereas final dividend reported in the financial position statement (refer appendix 1 and 2). The major element of conceptual framework associates with the level of prudence, reliability and relevance to present the financial statements in true and fair manner. It is essential to incorporate the financial information and disclosures as per the materiality and relevance so that the reliable performance information can be determined by the users of financial statements. Preparation of financial statements involves prudence level which provides that the company should maintain conservative approach while recognizing the business incomes and expenses. Conceptual framework requires that the incomes should not be overestimated while expenses should not be underestimated since it would reflect the unrealistic profitability[7]. Considering the annual report of Wesfarmers Limited, it can be said that the company followed the conceptual framework requirements. The amount of incomes and expenditures has been recognized by following the accrual method and prudence level that reflected the transparent and fair value of companys performance (refer appendix 3). Subsidiary companies accounting has been conducted by following the AASB standards to recognize the foreign currency and related translation to the currency of Australia (refer appendix 4). To present the disclosure on organisational material future events has been reported in accordance with the group estimates and relevant accounting policies[8]. Segment information has been represented and disclosed as per AASB standards to provide information of business activities as per geographical region and different business segments (refer appendix 5). Prudence level addressing the disparity in Corporate Reporting In order to prepare the financial statements, compliance of prudence level is essential for making reasonable estimates and judgments to report the incomes, expenditures and future losses. It is important to consider that income should not be overestimated and expenses should not be underestimated so that the financial statements reflect true amount of profit. Corporate reporting includes reporting of business information, relevant disclosures together with the reporting of corporate governance as well as corporate social responsibility[9]. In order to present the corporate governance report, it is important to incorporate the directors contribution, management performance and regulatory compliance. The statement of corporate governance of Woolworths Limited presents equity shareholding information together with the information on largest shareholding (refer appendix 6)[10]. Besides, corporate governance report of Wesfarmers represented an overview on business values, shareholders in formation, compliance frameworks and responsibilities of organisational board members. It has been noted that the company reported the management of water use and process of recycling that helps in reducing the waste products resulting in production increase[11]. Identification of differences in corporation disclosures Certain differences have been identified in the financial statements of both the companies with respect to the conceptual framework. The financial report of Woolworths Limited represents specific disclosure on the business risk, which was not disclosed in the financial report of Wesfarmers. Financial statements of Wesfarmers disclosed five years financial history while Woolworths reported capital management as well as space rollout plan. While considering the estimates and judgements to determine the value of business finances, Woolworths Limited considered historical records along with the prevailing market records. Besides[12], Wesfarmers used the future event bases to consider the estimates and judgements of incomes and expenses as well as valuation of certain assets and provisions[13]. Wesfarmers Limited presented detailed information with respect to the capital management fund activities for proceeds as well as borrowings along with the information on discontinued operations. Ho wever, financial report of Woolworths does not contain such information in a specific report for the current financial year. Segment reporting disclosure reflected difference in both the organisations annual report, though compliance of AASB standards has been made. Woolworths Limited represented segment information disclosure on the basis of operating segment and geographical details together with the disclosure of material information[14]. On the contrary, Wesfarmers Limited represented description in terms of product and geographical facts. Woolworths Limited measured the business expenditures as well as contingent provisions on the basis of fair value whereas Wesfarmers Limited measured the transactions based on historical records. Woolworths Limited reported dividend amount for ordinary shares, DRP shares and shares under Treasury in specific report. Besides, information for dividend paid and payable by Wesfarmers had been reported in the income statement and balance sheet as proposed and balance for franking credit during the financial year. Recommendation As per the above discussion on compliance of regulatory frameworks of accounting and conceptual framework for selected companies, it can be recommended the management should follow appropriate accounting disclosures for business information. It is further recommended that the companies should follow a standard format to report and represent the financial information which is not present in the annual report of Wesfarmers. In addition, the companies are recommended to consider the mandatory regulations for reflecting the material business risk, capital management and borrowings. Since, the information helps the users in evaluating the performance of the companies for investment and business decisions, it is important to reflect the accountable and transparent information. Wesfarmers Limited is recommended to represent the segment information by stating the geographical statistics, product and service details and information on business operation. Woolworths limited is recommended to c onsider the future events for estimates and judgements instead of historical records as it represents fair and reasonable information. Conclusion In view of the analysis of financial statements and other statutory reports of both the organisations, it can be said that the companies complied the regulations of accounting standards. Regulations of conceptual framework and AASB standards have been considered while reporting the material disclosures. The companies followed the relevant norms for reporting on corporate social responsibility and corporate governance for the benefit of community and stakeholders. For the purpose of recognizing and representing the business information in true and fair manner, it is essential to follow the accrual basis, level of prudence and going concern. The companies followed the relevant accounting principles to present the financial data during the financial year for measuring the business performance level and financial position values. Patience Essays (3171 words) - Emotions, Patience, Spirituality

Patience ART 275 VIDEO & SOUND BARRET LANGLINAIS 7/28/99 PATIENCE My Monday morning already was a hectic one. I found myself already ten minutes late for work, as I drove down the busy main street in the city where I lived. Coming up on a stoplight, I cut off a driver in the car next to me. Having total disregard for anyone but myself. As I proceeded through the stoplight it was quite apparent that I had upset the driver in the car. As I drove it became more and noticeable that this young driver had become more and more upset. We would reach stoplight after stoplight taking turns cutting off each other. In the process we would totally disregard the other drivers we included in our being impatient with one another. I had to be first at every light, every stop sign, or passing others in front of us. My motivation was the only thing important to me. Even at the expense of this other drivers and their own motives. Finally after several instances of getting the finger from him I stopped at a stop sign rolled down my window and said to him that I would really like to talk to him. Already knowing that I was so late for work I hoped that he would oblige. He did and we proceeded to find the next available side road in which we could get off the main road. Getting out of the car I was hoping he wouldn't be too angry. I approached him and motioned to a nearby park bench. We sat down and this is what took place. ALAN: Hi sir, How are you today? I would like to talk to you about what took place a few moments ago. Is that Okay? JIM: That is certainly okay, I was kind of thinking that we needed to talk about it to. ALAN: What's your name? JIM: My name is Jim. ALAN: Hi Jim, my name is Alan. JIM: Nice to meet you Alan. ALAN: Why were you in such a hurry Jim? Don't you realize that it takes patience to get where you are going. JIM: Yes, I realize this. May I ask why are you in such a hurry. If you are worried about patience from me, what is your meaning of the word patience? ALAN: Patience to me is a virtue few people have mastered. Patience is something gained with experience. Life shows us in many ways what it takes to have true patience. I feel the true meaning of patience is self respect as well as respect of others. JIM: Does this mean that true patience is a learned virtue? Does this mean that respect is important to you. Do you respect yourself as well as respect me? Then why do you act like myself when you get behind the wheel of your car? Can you explain these questions I have. It seems to me that you in explaining yourself contradict what you believe. ALAN: I can see where you can come up with these questions. With the way I was acting I too would question my motives on the road as well as my believing what true patience means. JIM: It is apparent that all you are truly worried about is your self. Why would you care for others as well as other situations that require patience, isn't being first truly what all people want. If not, then why do we look in every car on every freeway and see impatience. Motivation to be first. All they care about is themselves. ALAN: I can see your point. Not only is this situation important for developing patience. I believe that this is only one of the many reasons and meanings of patience. And realizing the other reasons as well brings us to respect of others. JIM: I guess you might be right. What might they be? ALAN: When you were a kid and your father made you wait for something you truly wanted. You went through a lot of pain. Is this right? It wasn't easy. He had good intentions. He knew that someday you would be faced with certain situations where you would put into practice, this lesson of waiting on others. In other words, patience. JIM: When I

Military Tactics essays

Military Tactics essays There were many types of military tactics in World War 1 that were new to the war, some such tactics were trench warfare, new technology that helped to penetrate the defenses base such as the flame thrower, mustard gas, tunneling, and in some cases tanks. The flame-thrower used pressurized air, carbon dioxide or nitrogen to force oil through a nozzle. Ignited by a small charge, the oil became a jet of flame. The Flame-thrower was first used in the western front in 1914. It was operated by two men, and was mainly used to clear enemy soldiers from front line-trenches. In the beginning they had a range of 25 meters but later it increased to 40 meters, which meant they were only effective over narrow areas of no mans land. Another type of war tactic was Mustard Gas; first used by the German army in 1917. The most lethal of all the poisonous gases used during the war, it was odorless and took twelve hours to work. The skin of the victims blistered, the eyes became very sore and they began to throw-up. It caused internal and external bleeding and attacked the bronchial tubes, stripping off the mucous membrane. This was extremely painful and most soldiers had to be strapped to their beds, which meant fewer soldiers for the opposing sides. Another type of tactic was trench warfare. In the beginning of the war the British soldiers were given 10 ounces of meat and 8 ounces of vegetables a day. Later, the size of the army grew and the German blockade became more effective, the army could not maintain these rations and by 1916 this had been cut to 6 ounces of meat a day. Later troops not in the front-line only received meat on nine out of every thirty days. In the western front, the soldiers meals in the trenches were caned corned beef, bread and biscuits. By the winter of 1916 flour was in such short supply that bread was being made with dried ground turnips. The main food after supplies ran out were pea soup with a f...

Assignment should be presented as a Journal opinion article. The Essay

Assignment should be presented as a Journal opinion article. The article should be timely and address an economic issue of current interest to Wall Street Journal readers - Essay Example For the Chicago region, costs of shipping have risen since some organizations are forced to use other routes, which were more expensive. In Dallas, trucking companies argue that cargo volumes went down due to West Coast ports shipping disruptions. This is because small-parcel and rail shipments went up in January, even though they were high the previous year. For the retailers in the western states, they would have realized strong sales during the holiday season if the delays that emerged from West Coast ports never took place. These issues led to a reduction in agricultural exports, as perishable goods were wasted while in storage containers before they could be shipped (Portlock). In addition, Boston Fed revealed that firms were under pressure, particularly due to the negative influences that resulted from unanticipated weather conditions in the southern part of New England. Nevertheless, products, such as coats, boosts, and winter sporting equipment realized strong sales. However, several retailers said that more than 200 stores situated in New England could not operate for a few days due to extreme weather conditions (Portlock). New York, on the other hand, is showing a rise in available rentals, indicating new economic developments, especially in Brooklyn. A transportation analyst situated in Philadelphia region stipulated that the flourishing traffic is nearing levels last witnessed during the previous expansion. In Cleveland district, decline in prices of gasoline have encouraged certain individuals to purchase trucks and SUVs, reaching a sales rise of about 7 percent compared to January 2014. However, a number of dental equipment producers in Richmond area said low number of patients led to reduced sales of the products. In the case of Atlanta region, establishments meant for casual dining witnessed a rise in customer volumes as clients were becoming

Democracy and the Current Situation of Latin America Research Paper

Democracy and the Current Situation of Latin America - Research Paper Example These definitions are just two among the many but are representations of its broadest sense. Though no matter the word â€Å"democracy† is defined, it has no universal established definition. Different democratic countries all over the world have their own democracies in varying degrees. Despite the differences based on specific experiences of each nation, democracy is seen to be distinguished by mainly two characteristics. First is the equality among its people while the other is the freedom to what it is to be fully human. A very informative case of all the other aspect of democracy can be seen through Latin America with a special focus on countries namely Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, and Mexico. These countries meet the conditions of a democratic regime. However, continental regions of Latin America are confronting serious dilemmas brought by their current democracy which is lacking in quality. Berkman and Cavallo’s (2006) research has found out that democracy is one of the top 10 that challenges the regions of Latin America. ... Given the lack of effective political leaders that should govern and impose what it means to be democratic, the people of Latin America suffer from wide range problems, may it be individual or social. For the reason that Latin American nations have ineffective democratic governments, democracy comes closer to its negation. Instead of equality, it is inequality which shapes the said regions. Despite the unceasing conscious efforts of strengthening the political rights of the people, Latin America is extremely suffering from inequality as well as extreme poverty. The distinction between the rich and the poor becomes now clearly evident. This difference is even reinforced by different factors. Due to poverty, starvation is witnessed from the different regions. These regions lack the access and resources to the basic necessities. Not all are fortunate to have the right to education for it has been now a privilege amo ng those who can afford to get themselves educated. With the lack of education comes along the hindrance to employment. All these further lead to increase of poverty level which then, contributes more to all the other problems faced by the Latin Americans. Since all these are related and connected like a spider web, less and less are having the lives they should have as promised by the democratic system. Each day is getting worse and worse for the failure of the State of functioning properly to its people. Freedom is no longer attainable. Freedom to what it is to be fully human is now only for those who have all the means and all the capital. People feel suppressed with all the absence of their rights.

Murder Rationale in Dostoevskys Crime and Punishment Essay -- Crime P

Murder Rationale in Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment Feodor Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment is a murder mystery unlike most murder mysteries. In this novel the reader knows "who done it"; the mystery lies in why the murder is committed. Throughout the story, Raskolnikov gives three main reasons why he kills Alena Ivanovna. Although these reasons seem unrelated on a superficial level, there is truth in all of them. What's more, each one builds on its predecessor. Raskolnikov's first two reasons are scrutinized by Sonya one at a time as his solitary motive for murder. These reasons are then disproved on their own, leaving one ultimate motive that essentially encompasses the other two. As readers, we sometimes tend to want a direct explanation for events that have occurred. Dostoevsky gives us explanations, but they are not direct and can be confusing if we are looking for an obvious cause and effect relationship. Crime and Punishment imitates life in that the happenings do not always fit in nice neat categories. Perhaps this is one of the elements that make it such an intriguing and acclaimed novel. Raskolnikov's first reason for murdering the pawn broker is to help himself. He claims he wanted the money. He states in his confession to Sonya, "It was to rob her" (348). It is obvious that he needed money for school. Also, if he had the money to put himself through school, his mother would not have to scrimp and borrow from others to help her son. Since the death of his father, Raskolnikov's mother and sister are greatly dependent upon him to make something of himself. His mother says in a letter to him, "You are all we have, Dunya and I, you are everything to us, our only hope and trust" (25). In this same letter, his mo... ... commoners. His last reason was accepted as his ultimate motive; "Sonya understood that this gloomy creed had become his faith and his law" (353). Raskolnikov himself does not really know why he is committing murder when the murder is taking place. It is a discovery of self and of a theory that was not yet developed. He uses excuses for his reasoning in the beginning, saying that he needs the money, and, later, that he is performing a service for the greater good. These excuses are necessary and fundamental steps of Raskolnikov's journey into self-discovery. It is human nature to rationalize, which is what he is doing. Ironically, this very need for rationalization and excuse is what fails him in his quest for proof of his superiority. Work Cited Dostoevsky, Feodor. Crime and Punishment. Trans. Jessie Coulson. Ed. The last chapter of the novel ‘The Crucible’

‘Here. Now. It's all clear,' whispered Abigail coarsely, choking back a cough. Mercy squeezed through the small gap in the fence to join Abigail the other side. Together, grasping each other's hands for comfort, they darted through the trees, into the forest that served as a barrier between the sea and Salem. They ran along a faint path of trampled grass, till they arrived at a clearing, the same clearing where they and the others had danced six months ago. They stopped at the edge, panting for breath, with the moonlight streaming in through the gap in the trees illuminating the way ahead. They gazed around in silence, till Mercy sniggered. ‘I was just rememb'rin' the time we danced, and Parris,' she paused, smiling in amusement, ‘and Parris, he saw me dancin' naked!' ‘Aye, and dear Betty,' said Abby, ‘she were too young, we should never have let her come.' ‘That were wierdish, though. She lay on her bed, frozen, whimp'ring for her Mama. Aye, that were wierdish.' ‘Mary meant to tell-I know it. I remember her words even now, ‘Witchery's a hangin' error', ‘it's a sin to conjure',' Abby imitated, with a likeness that caused Mercy to shiver with remembrance as it all came back to her head. ‘Did you hear what happened to Tituba? She left the courtroom with Sarah Good, shoutin' to a cow ‘Take me home, Devil; Devil take me home.' She told them all that the Devil, ‘him be pleasure-man in Barbados!† Mercy laughed, as Abby ran through the trees shouting charms in Tituba's Barbados accent. ‘You beg me conjure, come, make charm with me!' Abby shrieked, violently swaying over an imaginary fire, as Tituba had done, calling out the names of the ingredients as she plucked them from the air. She beckoned to Mercy in a low whisper, ‘Come try Tituba's charm, come drink to kill Goody Proctor.' ‘Abby, you'll make me dream corruptions soon, and yourself,' said Mercy, with a serious tone to her voice. ‘You make me think I did see spirits, that I did see that yellow bird, on the beam, behind the rafter in the court room.' ‘Come on Mercy, you're harder than that,' teased Abby, ‘if I hadn't seen your face, I would have thought you were Mary Warren.' Mercy playfully punched Abby in the arm. Abby lay there shivering as the cold night breeze passed through the forest, whistling through the trees. The events of the last six months ran through her head, it was only the spring when they had danced. The bluebells had gone now, but the memories hadn't. The trial had taken its toll on Abby, her face was pale and the bags under her eyes grew each day. The days that went on forever in the courtroom, tirelessly questioned, till they got the answer they wanted, truth or not. She still had the guilt feeling in her, that Proctor's death was not meant to happen, and that she could have stopped it. But she forced this to the back of her mind, but it haunted her when her mind was still, each night, and slowly, it was wearing her down. She looked over at Mercy, whose large figure was stretched out on the grass beside her, her mouth wide open, loudly inhaling the cold air. Mercy was a tough girl, she had to be to work at the Putnams', yet had a conscience but Abby knew that it could easil y be convinced by some persuasive talking. She slowly drifted into doze but was easily awoken by the first light of dawn. She leapt up, knowing they had to be out of the region fast, or else they would be caught, made to return and punished. Within minutes, Mercy and Abby were running through the trees till they were out in the open fields at least three miles from Salem. ‘We'll have to stop for some food at a farm, else we'll never make it to Andover,' Mercy said. ‘When the sun rises over those hills,' said Abby pointing to the East where the red, early morning light was focused. ‘Then we'll find the nearest farm, and get somethin' till last us till tonight.' They walked for an hour, hardly talking. Their shoes pounded on the dirt track road, with an urgency that urged them to walk faster. They reached a turning to a farm, and turned down. ‘I'm goin' to talk to the farmer,' said Abby, taking control. ‘Stay a few metres back, but still in view.' Abby strided on up to the door and beat her fist on it, before Mercy could argue. ‘Good Sir, we have been travellin' for over a week now, and our bodies are weak. We had to leave our small village as Mercy, this girl here, she was found guilty of traffickin' with spirits.' Abby's voice deliberately started to crackle, as if attempting to hold in her tears but not very successfully. ‘She was so weak; I felt I couldn't leave her to run away by herself, if she didn't, she would have had to face the rope, and I care for her, I do.' ‘Aye,' the farmer said, nodding. ‘And so you gave all up for this sinner here.' ‘Aye, 'tis right good Sir. My name will be soiled in these parts, but Mercy would never have made it to Boston by herself. I felt it my duty as a friend.' A tear dropped from Abby's eye, and she made no attempt to wipe it away. ‘I'm sure my wife will have some spares for you,' said the farmer, smiling kindly down at her. ‘But she won't like you sharing it with your friend, she will never help the devil in any way. Goody Jones, do you have any left of yesterday's pie?' ‘Aye, of course, I'll bring it to you right away,' called a voice from within the small old building. Within moments, a small plump lady had appeared, with a kind smile, and welcoming eyes, like her husband's. ‘Oh, how long have you been travelling, child?' she asked, looking at Abby, ‘you'll need to get some of this down you soon. Here let me wrap it up in a cloth.' She disappeared again, for a moment, ferreted around in some drawers, and appeared with a patterned cloth to wrap up the pie. ‘Here you go. And safe journey.' ‘Safe journey,' called the two of them, as Abby turned round and started to walk towards Mercy. She stopped at the sight of Mercy's face. It was tense with anger, and as red as the fresh berries on the bush nearby. ‘Abigail Williams, how dare you? You lied, you lied, I never-‘ she broke off in anger. Her eyes could have shot like arrows. Her body was stiff and started to shake. ‘We had to get food, I had to,' Abby replied defiantly. ‘You lied,' repeated Mercy, spitting the words out as if they were poisonous. ‘You had to leave too, Abigail Williams, we left as you could not walk through the village without hearing your soiled name mentioned, and people running from your face. It were not my fault we had to leave, Abby, 'twas yours as well. Tell them that, Abby, tell them that you caused the death of John Proctor, and mark it Abby, mark it, Elizabeth is sure to hang once her baby is born.' Mercy was almost shouting by now. Abby kicked a stone in the road. ‘Look we had to get food,' she explained, knowing she shouldn't have, but never prepared to admit. ‘I'm goin' to Andover, and then to Boston. I don't care about you, I saved you Mercy from the judges, I saved you, and this is how you repay me? Well Mercy Lewis, you go by yourself and I'll go by myself and we'll see who gets there in the end.' ‘Fine, I can manage myself, I'm eighteen now, older than you, and you never helped, just caused problems. 'twas your fault we danced, you begged Tituba to conjure, because of you, Abigail Williams, the whole country's talkin' witchcraft.' At this, Abby turned her back on Mercy and strode down the dirt track, her eyes focused on the skyline ahead, not turning to look back, at Mercy's aghast face. She smiled a tight, forced smile, but she was happy, Mercy was shocked. Mercy's face was frozen in horror, the words had just come out of her mouth, she knew, although she was older than Abby, she couldn't look after herself, and Abby could. It was Abby's imagination that had lied them through, it was Abby's determination that would get her to Boston, it was Abby who could look after herself, not Mercy. She could never give in to Abby, so she turned dejectedly back down the long straight road and started to walk the long way back to Salem. She dragged her feet on the ground, wishing she hadn't said anything. She was tempted to run after her, but it was too far, and that was exactly what Abby wanted. Abby, meanwhile, was far in the distance. She sat down on a boulder by the side of the road to rest her aching feet. She closed her eyes and thought of Boston. She imagined the skyline view, the way it had always been described. A big town, busy with people, no one would know her name, or what she had done. She was about to start a new life. She could smell all the market fish, and could hear the buzz of noise from the inhabitants. The place was alive with colour, she had left Salem, and its old wooden buildings, her mud covered clothes, faded in time. Her life seemed awash of brown and grey, but now as she thought ahead, she dreamt of the exciting new start, about to begin.

Literary Analysis The Great Gatsby - 1806 Words

Literary analysis: The Great Gatsby To truly achieve The American Dream is nearly impossible without personal sacrifice, as evidenced by The Great Gatsby by F. Scott. Fitzgerald. As the characters, especially Gatsby himself, eventually learn, there is no way to make the fantasy of a perfect life a reality. There are ways to imitate the results, such hiding one’s true self from others, as Gatsby attempts with Nick, or an all-encompassing devotion to one thing or person, as if that thing or person will finally make the seeker feel complete, in Gatsby’s case: Daisy. Eventually, the only way to truly enjoy your success and the American dream is learning to appreciate what you have, as Daisy does when she cuts ties with Gatsby and stays with Tom. Every character in this book is guilty of deception of their true feelings. Myrtle cheats on her husband with Tom, and is willfully blind to the fact that she will never be his social equal, no matter how many nice things he buys for her. The day she meets Nick for example, she has friends over to the apartments Tom bought for her â€Å"her personality had also undergone a change, the intense vitality...Converted into impressive hauteur... she expanded as the room grew smaller around her† (30). Nick s describes how being surrounded by the nice things Tom bought for her influences her behavior.
